Tips & Tricks

There are a few secrets that the contractors use learned by years of installing roofing.

We have listed some tricks of the trade that might help you. Be careful when accessing a roof. All ways use fall protection.

Roof Cleaning

I think using a leaf blow works the best. Water and a rake can do to much damage. Blowing from the ridge downward will remove a lot of deris from your roof. This also works great for the end of a new roof job.

Roof Sheathing

When tacking your roof sheeting in place, mark where your rafters are. This will help later to know where your rafters are. Use a chauk line on those mark you made and this make it easier for nailing off the sheathing.

Roof Ventilation

Use the 1 in 150 rule which most manufacturers require. Take your sq. footage of the living space and divide that number by 150. That will give you the total sq. footage of ventilation you need intake and exhaust.
Example 1500 sq. ft. of living space divide by 150 = 10 ft. 50% of that should be intake and 50% of the other exhaust.

Roof Access

Ladder safety is important. This is where alot of accidents happen because you go up and down aladder many time in a day when working on a roof.

  • Tie off your ladder to the roof so it will not slide.
  • Have the ladder extend three feet above the roof edge.
  • Always have your both hands on the ladder. Use a rope tied off to your tools and lift them up when you are on the top of the roof.

Roof Systems

Most roofing systems have the instructions online review them and ask question if you need to. The more knowledge you can gain the better off you will be. Learn The Roofers Language.

Please review the installation sheet of the product you are using. It is easy do do online. Placement of the nails is important to have a warraty in place and more importantly having a good roof. Most asphalt roofs require four nails. In some high wind areas or with steep mansard type roofs they ask for six.
For other products just ask and I will get answer for you.

Clogged Downspouts

Most people including roofers will try clearing a clogged downspout by shoveing a garden hose down the downspout. Some will try a leaf blower. Both may be successful but if not, try this.
Using a leaf blower, inserting the nossel into the bottom outlet and blowing upwards will loosen the jam or clog. Be careful. Who know what will come flying out of that downspout.
